1080p Background
1080p is "True High-Definition" TV. It is the highest resolution standard for HDTV's.
It is also the standard that many major movies are filmed in, and that more and more TV programs are made in. So if you want to future proof yourself this is certainly the standard to buy for your HDTV.
The number 1080 refers to the 1,080 lines of vertical resolution, while the letter p stands for progressive scan (which also means that it's non-interlaced) which means every one of the 1,080 lines is replaced with each new frame.
Other resolution standards that are considered to be HDTV are:
720p. This has 720 lines of vertical resolution (so 360 fewer than 1,080)
1080i. While this has the same number of lines of resolution they are served interlaced, which means that only half the lines are refreshed at any one time. The refresh happens so fast that your eye doesn't notice the changeover.
Advantages of 1080p
- A 1080p TV can play the other two (HDTV) formats.
- Blu-Ray high definition DVD players can play 1080p movies.
- By buying 1080p you future proof yourself - this is the highest standard.
- Video games on the XBox and PS3 can be played in 1080p
